les manuscrits d'art calligraphique

Un topic sur les manuels de calligraphie ancien qui nous sont parvenus et qui sont a mon grand regret fort peu présenté même par les plus grands spécialistes !

Les Manuscrits calligraphiques de la Houghton Library de l' Harvard University


La bibliothèque de cette prestigieuse université possède un fond important de manuscrits qui semble remarquable. Par exemple concernant les modeles de calligraphie, le Livre d\'Ecriture (Writing book: Specimens of German cursive, fraktur, italic and roman scripts.) de Joachim Bendel Rechenmaister unnd Notarius réalisé en 1575 malheureusement le site en ligne ne fourni que trois images des 17 pages de ce manuscrit qui semble superbe.

Dans le descriptif du catalogue a signaler aussi mais sans images fourni ou tres peu pour notre plus grande frustration dont des manuels par des maitres de la calligraphie comme Johann, Neudörffer, Cataneo ou Vespasiano.

- le MS Typ 113 Currentschrifften belegt de, 1525
"Specimens of different varieties of German cursive script.The German texts, on the rectos only, are written in black ink, and come from the Psalms. They are accompanied by alphabets and lines of model pen-strokes. Initial lines and letters are variously in red and black with ornate decoration."

- le MS Typ 114 Ein Buchlein von mannigerlei Schrifftenn de Asmus Biersteden. 1594.
"Specimens of handwriting including German cursive, fraktur, secretary, roman and italic.The German texts, religious and mostly from the Psalms, are written on the rectos only. The writing is in black and red occasionally highlighted in gold, with large ornamental initials and other pen-work decoration."

- le MS Typ 114 Calligraphic Alphabets du monastère de Saint Gall , 1592.
"The alphabets are of capital letters mostly gothic or lombardic in shape, usually 4 or 9 to a page, the letters of different colors."

- le MS Typ 166 Penmanship specimen book deVespasiano . 1548.
"Vespasiano’s specimens show a number of different mostly italic scripts, with ornate gothic initial letters, all in black and red. The other specimens are likewise in various scripts, including chancery hands, all in black and generally less formal"

" Written in a large variety of scripts, changing from one paragraph to another. Illustrations include cyphers and monograms in gold and colors."

"Writing specimens in a variety of roman, italic and chancery scripts in brown ink. Up to f. 10 each specimen is on a separate page within an elaborate pen-drawn border"

« Specimens in Italian and alphabets in a variety of hands, chiefly gothic and italic, with some decorated ones ».

- le MS Typ 187 : Alonso Martin del Canso , El arte de escrevir ,1544.
« The principal hand is italic but there are specimens of many others. Included in the second part are decorative and exotic alphabets and ciphers. Some specimens are signed and dated Salamanca 1544 »

- le MS Typ 246 Bernardino Cataneo, Penmanship specimen book,1545.
« The specimens (verses from Ariosto, Orlando Furioso) are written in Italian in brown ink with some letters in gold ink. The writing is in an italic hand with many swash letters. Alternate rectos and versos are used »

- le MS Typ 296 Giovanni Batista Bini, Alfabeto di lettere maiuscole ecclesiastiche ,ca. 1580.
« 24 large black calligraphic gothic capital letters in the German manner, decorated with cherubs, grotesques, plants, etc. One letter is pasted onto each leaf, on the rectos only. »

« The texts are written in black or brown ink in a variety of fraktur and cursive scripts, each having a decorated initial letter. Some of these are red or blue. »

- le MS Typ 600 Penmanship specimen book ,1589.
« The specimens on ff. 2-10 (rectos only) are on vellum leaves guarded in and interleaved with blue tissue. The texts are in French and German, written in a variety of cursive, roman and blackletter scripts, in brown, black, purple and gold. »

- le MS Typ 969 Penmanship specimens, de Coppenol, Lieven Willemsz,1622.
« Written in black ink in various cursive scripts with elaborate flourishes. Both sheets are signed, but only the Dutch one is dated. »

- le MS Typ 1121 Philip Stos , Ein gutte ordnung und kurze unterricht ,1555
« Specimens derived from Neudorffer’s book Ein gute Ordnung 1538 (ff. 1r-3r) -- page-openings showing an alphabet on the left-hand page and a specimen of writing on the right-hand page (3v-19r) -- larger ornamental alphabets (19v-21r) --further specimens (22r, 23r).The texts are written in German in various blackletter and German cursive scripts except on ff. 10v-13r, 23r (Latin in blackletter, roman and italic). »

voilà faut avouer que c'est drolement rageant de ne pas avoir acces a tout ces documents même virtuellement. Cela va peut etre se faire mais en attendant je lance comme une bouteille a la mer: si jamais quelqu'un connais quelqu'un qui est dans la place ou alors il faudrait faire un courrier de réclamation !
